Cakes for a Cause
Over the last 5 years, it has become a tradition for the team behind Wilks to host a charity bake sale. Complete with a hint of competition. Members of the team from each department donned their aprons to help raise money for the Macmillan Coffee Morning.
This year, we had a mouth-watering, jaw-dropping range of cakes entered. Some cakes even took inspiration from Wilks’ link to the marine industry, such as a desert island cake and a cake shaped like a pirate ship.
Derek Shakespeare and long-term judge Marie Berry judged the cakes based on taste and appearance. They definitely had a tough job on their hands, but in the end, a decision for first, second and third place was made.
First Place: Debbie, Senior Sales Administrator
Debbie made a ‘Really Chocolatey Fudge Cake’ styled with expert-level icing. The cake was considered an aesthetic masterpiece and tasted as good as it looked. Debbie was presented with a 1st place trophy that afternoon.
Second Place: Amber, Production Office Administrator
Amber won the second-place award for her Bailey’s cheesecake. She combined classic and innovative ingredients, resulting in a perfectly balanced flavour. Amber was praised for her creativity and attention to detail.
Third Place: Kirsty, Sales Administrator
Rounding out the podium was our third-place winner, Kirsty, who demonstrated precision and artistry with her Sticky Toffee cake, ‘The Bay Sticky Rollers’. However, the highlight was the intricate icing, as it really pulled together the whole cake.
The winning cakes were raffled off, and the rest of the cakes were sold throughout the day. The raffle and cake sales raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support. A charity that provides vital assistance to those affected by cancer, offering a lifeline of support and care during their challenging journeys.
With the effort and contribution of everyone, Wilks was able to raise £169 for Macmillan Cancer Support. This has been generously matched by Chris and Scott Berry, joint CEOs of Wilks. So, with this additional contribution, the total donation was brought up to £338 for a very worthwhile cause.
Well done all, and thank you to everyone for participating!
